Growing Grateful Children

Grateful Children Guaranteed

Why gratitude is better than cow tongue!

Shelly LaVigne

If you're a parent, you know that teaching your children how to be grateful, can be a challenge. What exactly does that mean? I remember at the dinner table, when I was a kid, my dad used to say, "you should be grateful for this cow tongue because there are kids starving in Africa!"  .. Now, you may not have heard the cow tongue part, but you certainly have heard the other part, no matter what continent was interjected. I looked up at my dad from the left side of my plate and the left side of my perspective, because that's where I always sat, which believe it or not,  gave him a disadvantage when he stabbed me with his fork in the back of my hand if I put my elbows on the table, because he was actually left-handed, "what the heck are you talking about!" I don't know anyone in Africa, and I certainly don't know anyone who would be grateful for cow tongue!!!

These days as a privileged American parent, whatever in the heaven that means, I don't 'have to' eat cow tongue because it's what's left in the freezer, but, I do need to help my children, and frankly, myself,  practice gratitude.  So what do I do?

Practice gratidute...

Reflect on what you are grateful for every night, no matter how minuscule you perceive it to be, there is always something to be grateful for, and talk about with your children. It's not hard but it does take some discipline and a little bit of time, enter Vulu Dolls, to guarantee that your children experience gratitude.

Gratitude is a practice. So practice.
